Founded in early 1971 by Gene Rosenthal as an umbrella corporation for various entities which until then functioned as trade names for Rosenthal, including Adelphi Records.
In the late 1980s acquired Sunsplash Records, Inc., founded by Gene and Howard Rosenthal, and its label Sunsplash Records.

[u]1964[/u]
- Adelphi Studios & Distributors (Gene Rosenthal T/A): basement recording studio and small independent record distributorship.
[u]1968[/u]
- Adelphi Records (Gene Rosenthal T/A): first LP record AD 1001 ([m650471]).
[u]1969[/u]
- Adelphi Films (Gene Rosenthal T/A): several documentary film projects produced and released by Gene Rosenthal.
[u]1971[/u]
- By 1971 there were yet more new (T/A) entities like Blind Basement Music Publishing, Black Dog Productions (5), Adelphi Artist Management, etc.
- Early 1971, Adelphi Records Inc. created as a DC corporation as the “umbrella” corporation for the then entities Adelphi Records, Adelphi Films, BBM Publishing, Adelphi Studios & Distributors (later known as CARD - Capital Area Distributors) and Black Dog Productions (5).
[u]1971 – 1981[/u]
- Adelphi Records expanded rapidly and eclectically, producing and releasing more than 120 LPs in almost all categories including Jazz, Folk, Blues, Rock, Country, Americana, Bluegrass and International.
- It also expanded its format releases to include cassettes.
[u]Early 1980s[/u]
- For a few years Adelphi Records briefly entered into a P&D distribution arrangement with Jem Records and their label PVC Records.
- One joint Adelphi/PVC record was released before they went bankrupt: The Fugs – “Protopunk”, which got a Grammy nomination for liner notes.
[u]1983[/u]
- Sunsplash Records, Inc. created by brothers Gene and Howard Rosenthal to release Jamaican reggae performances on LP and more specifically to release reggae live recordings from the 1982 Reggae Sunsplash festival whose total rights were purchased.
- Sunsplash Records proceeded to release (approximately) 12 well received LPs from the festival sessions over the next 6 or 7 years.
[u]Late 1980s[/u]
- Sunsplash Records, Inc. masters and trademarked name purchased by Adelphi Records Inc..
- Sunsplash Records label became a subsidiary label under the Adelphi Records label banner.
[u]Late 1980s – Early 1990s[/u]
- Genes (pronounced Jenn-ess) label launched by Adelphi Records Inc. as an in-house CD only label to release both Adelphi Records and Sunsplash Records catalog and new releases in CD format.
- The Blues Vault Series label launched under the Adelphi Records banner, under license to the Genes CD label.
[u]Early 1990s[/u]
- The entire Adelphi family of labels ceased producing, manufacturing, distributing or maintaining any cassette or LP inventory catalog of its previous releases – moving into only new CD releases or CD re-releases of previously released Adelphi or Sunsplash LP catalog.
- Genes CD label was discontinued as an entity and was merged into either Adelphi Records or its sub-label Sunsplash Records.

- Adelphi Records continues to release new CDs (and digital downloads of same) as well as slowly re-releasing yet more of the original LP catalog as either CD or digital only download re-releases.
