Instituut Voor Sonologie
Настоящее имя: Instituut Voor Sonologie
Formerly a music research laboratory founded in 1956, Instituut voor Sonologie (Institute for Sonology) is now incorporated in the Royal Conservatory in The Hague as an educational program for electronic music production, digital sound synthesis, algorithmic composition, voltage control technique, and music theory. Software and hardware design is also an important issue in the Institute's programs and workshops.
Please use Instituut Voor Sonologie only for productions made in The Hague. For productions made in Utrecht 1967-1986, please use Instituut Voor Sonologie Der Rijksuniversiteit, Utrecht.
1956-1960
Electronic music at the Philips Research Laboratories Eindhoven. In 1956, a studio for electronic music was opened within the acoustics department of Philips Research Laboratories for reverberation tests, concert multiplication, electronic music instruments, loudspeaker and microphone design, sound synthesis and psychoacoustics.
1960-1964
The Eindhoven studio moved to the Utrecht University and was called STEM
Philips decided in 1960 that the Research Laboratories could no longer house a studio which was becoming more a workplace for composers and less a means of meeting direct corporate needs. After exploring the possibilities for continuing the studio with various organizations, it was finally transferred to the Utrecht University.
1964-1967
STEM continued under the artistic direction of Gottfried Michael Koenig. In 1964, Koenig became artistic director with Frank de Vries as manager. Under their guidance, STEM grew up to be a studio complex that occupied the entire Atlanta building and started.
1967-1986
STEM became the Institute of Sonology. PDP-15 computer used to develop programs for algorithmic composition and digital sound synthesis, such as Project 1, Project 2, and SSP (Koenig), PILE (Paul Berg), MIDIM/VOSIM (Werner Kaegi), and POD (Barry Truax) landmarked the history of computer music.
In 1986, the Institute of Sonology is incorporated in the Royal Conservatory in the Hague.
