Founded by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA and the band's manager Stig Anderson in 1977. Its centrepiece was a Harrison mixing console, which was modified by technician Leif Mases to give it a unique sound, that in some respects resembled a Neve.
In 1984, Stig Anderson bought out his partners in the company. Six months later, he sold the studio to his daughter Marie Ledin, her husband Tomas Ledin, and their business partner Lennart Östlund.
The studio closed down on 1 May 2004 and relocated in 2007, when it took over the classic KMH Studios facility (rebranded as Ingrid Studios in 2011 under a new ownership). In the fall of 2015 business was scaled down and the equipment is currently packed in moving boxes at the home of Lennart Östlund, who still runs Polar Studios as a company.
At ABBA The Museum, part of the studio has been recreated, intact with Michael B. Tretow's pipe on the mixer table.
