Sint-Baafsabdij, Gent
Настоящее имя: Sint-Baafsabdij, Gent
Former Benedictine abbey in Ghent (Belgium) founded in the 7th century by Saint Amand at the confluence of the Leie and Scheldt, originally called "Ganda". In 1540, after the failed Revolt of Ghent Emperor Charles V ordered the abbey to be destroyed and replaced by a military fortress that came to be known as the "Spaniards' Castle". The fortress in turn was demolished in the 19th century but parts of the abbey still remain. The ruins are open to the public and the garden and refectory are used for concerts and events. Do not confuse with Sint-Baafskathedraal, Gent, which was renamed when the chapter moved there in 1540.
