Born March 12, 1926 in the Southside of Chicago, Delois was a Soprano gospel singer and is considered to be a gospel legend. She was often billed as The Royal Lady of Gospel Music. She joined the Roberta Martin Singers in 1946. As a member of Roberta Martin Singers, DeLois traveled around the United States and the world singing for the Lord, but she soon placed her career on hold to start her family. She married Frank Campbell, a Pastor. DeLois became a mother and a pastor's wife. She gained success with her own group, The Barrett Sisters trio (with her two sisters Billy Green Bey and Rodessa Porter) from 1964 to 1980s and performing up until the mid 2000s. Her subtle phrasing and silvery soprano helped define the sound and harmony of the group. DeLois Barrett Campbell died at the age of 85 in August 2, 2011. She had been wheelchair bound for years. In late 2009, she lost her voice and could not sing anymore but she was still present during some of the concerts with a microphone in her hand. She had battled arthritis and other health issues. As United States Ambassadors of American culture, The Barrett Sisters traveled the world singing God’s praises as representatives of the good things that come from America. Today, the names of both The Barrett Sisters as a trio and Delois Barrett Campbell as a great soloist are engraved into the Stellar Awards, the oldest and longest-running prize for gospel music achievements.
