Joel (Rio de Janeiro, May 9, 1947) is a Brazilian journalist, reviewer, translator and writer, one of the pioneers of countercultural journalism in Brazil. The owner of the newspaper he worked for, Última Hora, sent him abroad as a form of protection from political persecution by the dictatorial regime. So at 21 he became a correspondent in the United States. Between 1968 and 1971, traveled to Canada, Netherlands, Nepal, Turkey and Afghanistan. He was a contributor to the alternative newspaper Flor do Mal, created by Luiz Carlos Maciel, Tite de Lemos, Torquato Neto and Rogério Duarte. Then was called by Maciel to the first Brazilian version of Rolling Stone, where he debuted interviewing Big Boy (16), and maintained Na Estrada (On The Road) column. In the magazine's last months, then without authorization from the American publisher, he was editor, with Ezequiel Neves and Lapi (2), of the editions that had the ironic "pirate" caption on the cover. Joel is the author of four books (1971-2020) whose themes are counterculture, psychedelia, travel, music, the hippie movement and spirituality.
