Hollywood, ca. Jan.,1937 Unidentified male and female dialog achieved a stylistic breakthrough in party records. Previous recordings were done with musical accompaniment, much as they would be presented in a nightclub. Their dialogs were always unaccompanied and probably indicate a background in radio. Their timing is superb and their material is well written. Soon Ruff & Reddy and others followed their example. Doubtless the producer appreciated the savings but this move seems to indicate a shift away from juke box orientation towards the consumer market. A catchy tune can help mask lackluster writing or uninspired singing and musical numbers lend themselves to repeated listening. Unadorned spoken routines demand a certain polish from the performers. Their first recording was a great success and was released on an impressive number of labels. In the late 1940’s a female with a similar voice and, on occasion, the same material teamed up with other partners. “Simp” did not.
