American vocal quintet that toured and recorded with the orchestra of Woody Herman in the mid-1940s. The lineup in 1946 consisted of Gilda Maiken, George Becker, Harry Shumann, Harry Gedicke, and J. W. Meyers. The group was originally formed as a quartet called The Velvetones in 1942. Their debut recording, "Stars Fell On Alabama", was made in 1946 with Herman under their new name The Blue Moods. After Herman's band broke up, they met and recorded with Bing Crosby who changed their name to The Skylarks in 1947.
