American composer, lyricist, author and songwriter, born May 3, 1900 in Saginaw, Michigan and died July 24, 1973 in Southfield, Michigan. Berg was mainly active in Detroit, where he was first associated with the Chamberlain Music Company, working as a staff writer and a general manager. His first song, "Mary Ellen," was published in 1922. His collaborators included Richard W. Pascoe and Howard Simon. He was also known as "Mr. Circus," as he did public relations for circus companies when they visited Detroit. In the 1920s, he spent six years in Los Angeles working as a staff lyricist for Warner Bros. While there, he wrote lyrics for "Freshie", a song from the movie "The Freshman" (1925), and worked with many notable songwriters, including Jesse Greer and Russ Morgan (2).
