Cecil Sherwood

Australian tenor (b. Waverly, NSW 20 Sept., 1893 - d. St. Leonard's, NSW 13 Nov., 1957) Studied singing in Sydney. Concert debut in September 1912. Went to Europe in 1914 with a scholarship at Milan Conservatorium and made his European opera debut at Modena in 1918 (billed as Lionello Cecil) and recorded in Italy under that name for Columbia & The Gramophone Co. (1926-1942). Toured throughout Italy for the next 15 years (500 performances by June 1921), with a trip to South America in 1926. Returned to Australia in Sept., 1933 for ABC tour and made broadcasts of complete operas. Was in the 1935 cast of "The Desert Song" and toured New Zealand in 1937. Sung on the soundtrack of The Australian film "The Broken Melody" (1938). Continued to work with the ABC until 1942. Last performance at the NSW Conservatorium of Music in 1944.
