Eddie Eves was born in Samoa and later migrated to New Zealand before 1960. While working in microbiology in a medical lab, he met up with Horst Stunzner who he had known in Samoa. He ended up sharing a room at “the castle” on Castle Drive just off Mountain Rd in Auckland with Stunzner and Bruce Dawkins. Later Eves and Stunzner etc. would practice in Stunzner's Mt. Albert Flat. One day, possibly on the suggestion of Rudy Spemann, they went to a small recording studio to record an album as The Samoan Surf Riders. A somewhat different, earlier line-up of the group which included Malu Natapu had recorded the "Aloha Samoa" album with Bill Sevesi & His Islanders, released on Viking in 1962. This later Samoan Surf Riders line up then was comprised of Rudy Spemann, Hugo Spemann, Eddy Eves and Horst Stunzner. The result of their work, recorded in a day was the "Let Me Hear You Whisper" allbum, released on Octagon (2) and Viking in 1964. Eves was credited on their "My Samoan Maiden" EP released around the same time. Eves became a member of The Trio Samos with his brother Bedevere and a cousin of the Spemann's called Billl. They played various Auckland venues including coffee bars and won a talent contest. They recorded some singles for the Mascot (4) label. He died on February 28th, 2016 at age 81.
