San Jose, California, USA band, started in 1962 as The Preps. They changed their name to The New Arrivals in 1965. ------------------------ Preps #1, The Preps ------------------------ The began in 1962 with Tom Muller, Andre Meschi, Bill Smith and several others forming a band to play various events. In 1963, a meeting with Larry Mitchell and Jack Hayes of KLIV leads to them recording at Coast Recorders in San Francisco. Their first single was "Pam Pam" / "Elizabeth", Another Loser Records 176. This gained them an amount of popularity. Rod Gibino then joined them. In 1964 they opened for The Beach Boys at Exhibition Hall, Santa Clara Fairgrounds. They were hired by Beach Boy’s promoter, Irving Granz to be an opening act and back-up group for some major stars on tour. This was the first time a band from San Jose toured with major acts. Also that year, they released " Night Theme" / "What?" on Warped Records 5000. They were credited as Preps #1. The bass player on the "Night Theme" recording is said to be Sly Stone. He filled in for Rod Gibino who was sick at the time. It was also released on Dot Records 45-16663 the same year. On that particular release, they were credited as The Preps. Iin 1965 they released "The Moonracers" / " Cheese On The Moon Baby (It's Mozarella)" on Southbay Records 001. This would be the last release as The Preps. ------------------------ The New Arrivals ------------------------ The first release for The New Arrivals was "Take Me For What I Am" / "You Know You're Gonna Be" on South Bay Records – SBM 45 102 . In late 1965, Shorty Syres replaced Rod Gibino. They did quite well until the late 1960s when drafts into the army disrupted their career. They reformed years later.
