PAUS are a Portuguese rock band from Lisboa, featuring two drummers, Quim and Hélio, a bass player Makoto and keyboardist and guitarist Fábio Jevelim, with all four singing, they dubbed the drummers as a siamese drum as both drummers play turned to each other as they are flanked by the other musicians. The group name is Paus is Portuguese for Sticks and it's often stylised in all capital letters. The group was formed in 2010 by the drummers Joaquim Albergaria (vocalist for the rock band The Vicious Five and a former member of other several punk and hardcore bands) and Hélio Morais (drummer for the alternative rock band Linda Martini and post-hardcore band If Lucy Fell), with Makoto Yagyu (vocalist for If Lucy Fell and bass player for the post-rock band Riding Pânico, also a sound engineer) on bass and synths and João Pereira (also from If Lucy Fell and Riding Pânico) on keyboards and synths. The group released it's first EP titled "É Uma Água" later that year, issued by the dance music oriented label Enchufada (run by members of Buraka Som Sistema), the record was well received by critics and public alike and the music draw comparisons to post-rock groups such as the Battles and Tortoise. "Paus" their self-titled debut album was released in the winter of 2011, it was recorded between January and August 2011 at Black Sheep Studios in Sintra by the group and co-produced with Fábio Jevelim, mixed and mastered by Chris Common (former drummer for the post-hardcore group These Arms Are Snakes), issued once again by Enchufada and distributed by Valentim De Carvalho. The group initial sound remained, with the only change being that the group started to incorporate more lyrics into their vocalisations. The band band second album "Clarão" (Portuguese for Flash or Gleam) was released in the Spring of 2014 in Portugal on compact disc by Universal Music Portugal and on vinyl by Rastilho Records and also in Spain by El Segell Del Primavera, it featured a slightly more harsher and crude sound from their previous effort, the group had a line-up change in the previous year, as Fábio Jevelim who had co-produced their debut album and collaborated with them on the track "Cinema Lido" on theirs "Estamos Juntos" EP which had been included in some copies of their vinyl edition, had joined them replacing João Pereira, which had left to to creative differences, the change lead to the group music starting to include guitars into their sound, the album was once again recorded and produced by the band and mixed and mastered by Chris Common. "Mitra" the group third album was released in February 2016 issued on cd and on vinyl by Universal Music Portugal, the album title "Mitra" is a term that is used to refer to people of lower class in urban areas with a ruggedly look and are up no good and also as someone who does not belong there nor where it came from, it was a reference to their musical path as musicians who did not have a musical education background, the record was also more electronic and the lyrical vocals taking a more prominent role in their music, with both the instrumentals and the vocals taking around fifteen days each to be recorded, it was produced by the band at Haus, a recently founded music production studio by the band members. "Madeira" the group fourth album was released in April 2018 on cd and vinyl by Sony Music, the title of the album is a reference to the Portuguese island situated in the Atlantic Ocean, as the group had been invited to do a artistic residence there in September 2017, so even despite not being recorded or composed there, at the time of the invitation most of the songs instrumentals had already been composed, the island ended up serving as inspiration for the album conceptually and it fitted the record tropical sound, the group ended up using the residence instead to do a videoclip for each one of the songs there in the timespan of a week, the video-clips were then released at the same time of the release date onto youtube and sold as well on a cd-dvd edition of the album.
