Austro/German Schlager Beat Group. Die Bambis was founded in 1959 when the two Bavarians Mandy Oswald and Conny Fuchsberger and two Viennese musicians Hannes Schlader and Peter "Gary" Holzer started to play together. They started in small bars, gaining more and more fans due to Vocalist Mandy Oswald's unique singing style. His Italian sounding voice always evokes a feeling of desire and melancholy. In 1964 the Austrian Broadcasting ORF played a demo version of the song "Melancholie Im September" who climbed on top of the charts, taking it directly from "[m34153]". This song got really successful worldwide and got translated in 82 languages. There is also a chinese Version of this song. In 1965 they had another hit with "Nur Ein Bild Von Dir". They disbanded 1967 and Mandy Oswald continued to use the name of the band with a different line-up as Mandy Und Die Bambis. The Bambis were the first local group to achieve international fame after World War II and gave guest performances all over the world, namely in Spain, Italy, Scandinavia and Canada. In 1984 the original Bambis made a comeback in the Wiener Stadthalle. One of the following highlights was probably the appearance at the 1986 Danube Island Festival in front of 80,000 visitors. In 1990 the group finally split up. The last appearance of the Bambis was again at the Danube Island Festival. Mandy Oswald still sings from time to time and got honored by the City of Vienna for his over 7000 live performances.
