Aliza Gabbai (a/k/a Elisa, Alisa Gabbai) (born 31 December 1933 in Tel Aviv, died 14 December 2010 in Los Angeles) was an Israeli folk and pop singer who found success both in her native country and in Germany and Switzerland singing schlager. She was the daughter of Russian immigrants to the British Mandate of Palestine. In 1953 Aliza married composer and producer Rafi Gabay, whom she divorced in the mid '60s.. She remarried in 1971 kept her first husband's name.. Her daughter Daphna Dove, born in 1975, was a contestant on the 2005 American TV show Rock Star: INXS. Gabbai's first album, a collection of Hebrew folksongs and dance tunes called "Songs of Old and New Tel Aviv", was released in Israel in 1958. She began recording in German in the mid '60s but also continued recording in Hebrew as well as French and English. In Germany she peaked in 1966 at no. 13 with Winter in Canada and charted twice more in Germany that year. In 1968 she released her second Hebrew album, The New Beat (במקצבים חדשים), which topped the Israeli charts. She remained active in music until the mid 1970s. In 2014 a double CD compilation was released including of the complete contents of both of her Israeli albums plus bonus tracks from her singles and EPs.
