Cantor (singer) and composer. Born: 1894 (Town of Smila, Kiev, Russia) Died: 1985. Father of singing duo The Marlin Sisters (Gloria Goldman (2) [Goldy Malavsky] and Trudy Packer [Gittele Malavsky]). Cantor Samuel Malavsky was devoted, since childhood, to his cantorial art. By the time of his Bar Mitzvah he was a full-fledged professional Cantor. He toured all the major cities in Russia. Shortly before his eighteenth birthday he emigrated to New York where he became an apprentice to the well-known Cantor Yossele (Joseph) Rosenblatt. When his children grew up and his sons returned from army service during World War II, Cantor Malavsky decided to appear together with his family, creating a choir from his two sons - Albert Malavsky (Avraham) and Morton Malavsky - and his four daughters - Goldie (Gloria), Gittele (Trudie), Ruth Malavsky and Minnie Malavsky (Minnie); the latter became known as the Four Chazentes. He recorded many solo cantorial recordings, accompanied by an organ, as well as duets with his mentor Yossele Rosenblatt.
