Cipher was an American microtonal post-punk band from Los Angeles, California, active between 1977 and 1983. Cipher is notable for composing and performing in a seven-limit 22-tone scale invented by music theorist Erv Wilson; lead singer and lyricist Marsha Mann sang in the same tuning. The band's co-founder, Jose Garcia, who was closely associated with Wilson, guided the transition and re-fretted all guitars and bass. In 1981, Cipher released their debut self-titled LP. In 2018, the band established a new website and re-released "Cipher" with additional tracks, available on iTunes and SoundCloud. Cipher appeared on the New Wave Theatre television show hosted by Peter Ivers in the early 1980s. They were also listed in David Blanco's "Who's New Wave in Music: An Illustrated Encyclopedia, 1976-1982," above The Clash, and referred to as a "microtonal dance band."
