You know what happens when the clock strikes two?! “Oh Boy” by Jimmy Withersoon is what we gonna do! Here it is! Blues with a rhythm Volume One, brought to you by the fine collections of Farewell records from France. These rare recordings have been painstakingly re-released on LP in their original sonic 45rpm glory. The heavyweight champ of cool, Louis Jordan comes out of his corner singing “Hardhead’” from March of 1963. Louis shows he still had that knock out punch very late in his singing career. Lester Robertson, who was a member of the original Upsetters (Little Richard’s amazing band), gets together with some of his old band mates to record “My girl across town.” Released in 1959 on Montel records. Al Vance lays down his Chuck Berry impression with a 1965 Goldwax record, “Every woman I know.” One of Al’s first gigs was as a 15 year old guitar player with a guy named Charlie Feathers… Vince Monroe, credited here as Mr. Calhoun, lays down “Hello friends Hello Pal,” with fellow unknown Louisiana blues players Guitar Gable and Clarence Etienne on drums released on Zinn records. Sonny Boy Williamson, not Sonny Boy 1 or Sonny Boy 2, delivers the mail with the side, “Mailman Mailman,” released on Royal Audio Music in 1961. Mystery man “Big Connie,” hollers and honks with this Groove label side from 1956. Groove is so hep that they recorded a Milt Trenier side in 1954. Possibly “Big Connie” had a bigger record contract for another label… The very rare record from Pel, based in Louisiana, lets Jimmy Trotter give us “Hungry and Thirsty.” This side has a great swampy guitar solo, which may have been the reason this record charted in the United Kingdom. This record was released at the height of the Buddy Holly era in 1959. The theme of “my woman has a black cat bone” has often been used by bluesmen throughout the decades. Poppa Hop and his Orchestra deliver this side to us in 1958. Poppa is really Harding “Hop” Wilson the Texas born and Houston bred blues and Hawaiian steel guitar master. They called him “Hop” because that is the way he pronounced the word harp. His instrument… The great Jimmy Witherspoon lays us out with “Oh Boy.” Jimmy was discovered by singing with the Teddy Weatherford big band in India. The broadcasts were heard over Armed Forces radio during World War II. Jimmy also recorded some of his hits with the Gene Gilbeaux Orchestra witch included Herman Washington and Don Hill for Modern records. Gene and Don are more famous for being life long members of the legendary Treniers. This volume of fine blues sides sends us off with a boogie from Lighting Hopkins. Lighting was inspired to learn guitar from Blind Lemon Jefferson himself! He also did time on a Southern prison chain gang because he had, “to cut an old boy.” He was released after appearing before a Judge and singing him a blues.. Blues with a rhythm for sure, and this is only Volume I! I know it will inspire you to boogie! Again, we thank our esteemed producers for again giving these amazing voices an opportunity to shout.
