The organization was founded in 1969 by C. Edward Thomas to support Black music and musicians, essentially in the areas of education, research, and performance. It issued a bi-monthly letter, sponsored the Columbia Records,Columbia Masterworks Black Composers Series & issued non-symphonic repertories under its own label
