Netscape Corporation

American computer software developer and telecom services provider, active between 1994 and 2003 and formerly headquartered in Mountain View, California. Netscape Corporation, also known as Netscape Communications Corp and initially Mosaic Communications, was purchased by AOL in 1999. While "Netscape Connect" is still operational as Yahoo Inc's online ad division, the project appears to be deeply suspended. Netscape Corporation was best known for creating an eponymous web browser, also known as Netscape Navigator. Following the so-called "first browser wars," Netscape lost its market dominance, primarily to Microsoft's Interner Explorer, dropping from over 90% in the mid-1990s to under 1% by 2006. However, the browser's legacy continued; Netscape Corp published the source code in February 1998, a year before the AOL acquisition, and established "Mozilla Organization" to lead the project as open-source. After AOL effectively discontinued the browser's development, Mozilla Org became Mozilla Foundation in July 2003, currently designing and supporting a popular free, open-source web browser, Mozilla Firefox. As of December 2022, it has a 7.1% desktop share, making it the fourth-most adopted web browser after Google Chrome (66.1%), Microsoft Edge (11.2%) and Safari (9.6%).
