The University of North Texas (UNT), formerly known as North Texas State University, is an American public institution, established in 1890 and based in Denton. UNT provides professional education and 34 doctorate programs in science, engineering, liberal, fine and performing arts, humanities, and public policy. The University operates ten colleges, two schools, math & science academy for exceptional high-school-age Texan students, and a library system. Founded as a nonsectarian, coeducational private teachers' college, it was passed to the state by the board of trustees in 1899 to meet a growing public demand in education. In 1901, the U.S. Government officially adopted the school.
