Wing Records was a subsidiary of Mercury Records founded in 1955 that enjoyed its greatest initial success during the mid-1950s, mostly with vocalist Nick Noble. It released singles briefly in 1955 and 1956 but focus quickly shifted to LPs.
It became a budget reissue label in August 1958 in the US, and was launched as a similar budget label by Philips, Mercury's European owner, in the UK in February 1965 (UK Wing LPs had a logo that read A Philips Records Product on their covers; Philips and Mercury catalog material were issued on the label). Mercury in the US retired the label along with Smash (4) and Fontana in 1970.
In 1987, under Mercury president Ed Eckstein, Wing was revived as an R&B label and had successes with Vanessa Williams, Tony! Toni! Toné! and Brian McKnight. The label was deactivated in 1995 and its remaining artists (by then only Williams and McKnight) were transferred to parent label Mercury.
