Hrvatska glazbena unija (HGU) / Croatian Musicians Union was founded on 7th September 1992 with the aim to organize Croatian musicians and protect their status and financial rights. HGU has more than 4000 members, mostly musicians, as well as many others within other various groups closely connected with music industry. HGU has 8 branches and one board (formed on territorial principle). The members of HGU can, according to their goals and different areas of activity, form special departments, sections etc. The goals of HGU are to insure a complete organization of its members in terms of common protection and prosperity and to regulate reciprocal relations of the members, to improve the status and to work on the realization of the common professional interests and rights originating from members' activities. For that purpose HGU cooperates with other associations and organizations in the country and abroad, with state institutions as well as local authorities, gives expert assistance to members in terms of their rights realization, helps in realization of various deductions (taxes, customs duties etc.), participates in proposals of law regulations regarding musical and other performing arts activities, and performs other activities for realization of its goals. HGU is one of the founders of "Porin" discographers' award, as well as one of the founders of The Croatian Association for copyright protection.
