After the closing of Saltlageret, Ungdomshuset became an important Copenhagen punk scene. Björk, Nick Cave and Einstürzende Neubauten have performed in this very small venue before their careers took off. Ungdomshuset was owned by the municipality of Copenhagen but run by the users of the house = a leftish and autonome segment of the Copenhagen youth. After years of controversy between the owners and the users of Ungdomshuset, the house was sold in 1999 to an organization that was later taken over by a christian sect. After several trials the police was ordered to evict a core group of autonomes that had barricaded the house. They did March 1st 2007 and a week later the building was tore down. The eviction caused riots and burning offs of cars in the streets of Copenhagen in the following days. As a substitute the users were offered Ungdomshuset, Dortheavej (Opened October 18, 2008). This has never become the same important live venue as the predecessor.
