Chisa Records, Inc.

Parent company of the Chisa (2) record label, founded by Hugh Masekela and Stewart Levine in 1964 and named for the Zulu word for "burn". At first self-distributed, distribution deals were eventually made with Vault Record Co., Uni, Motown Record Corporation, Buddah Records & Blue Thumb. A production company, Chisa Productions, helmed by Levine, was responsible for producing most Chisa releases; a publishing arm, Chisa Music, administered songs written by signed artists.
