The original company was registered on July 26, 1943 and had a shop, with the name Hennes, in Västerås, Sweden from 1947 and on, where women's clothing exclusively were sold, During 1968, the company acquired the hunting apparel retailer Mauritz Widforss, which led to the inclusion of a menswear collection in the product range and the name change to Hennes & Mauritz.
