The Commodore Cinema opened 14th of September 1929. It was built for and operated by an independent operator Commodore National Theatres Ltd. which was controled by millionaire Ralph Specterman.
Associated British Cinemas (ABC) took it over from 24th of July 1933. It continued as a films only cinema until it was closed on the 8th of June 1963. On the 14th of June 1963, it was converted into a Mecca Bingo Club and this continued until 1981.
The building was immediately demolished in January 1982 and an office block known as Quantas House was built on the site. The original foundation stone of the Commodore Cinema was re-sited at the entrance to the new building.
