Operated under this name from late 1994 to November 1999, the previous name of the label is Music India Ltd.. During that time, PolyGram owns 51 percent of the company, increased from 40 percent during the Music India era. The company changed its name to Universal Music India Pvt. Ltd. following the PolyGram merger in November 1999. Following the name change, it is the third non-Indian record company to operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary, following Sony Music Entertainment (India) Pvt. Ltd. and Virgin Records (India) Pvt. Ltd. (EMI, later would start distribute other labels such as Capitol and Parlophone), both started its operation in 1997 and 1998, respectively.
