GRIM (Groupe de Recherche et d'Improvisation Musicales) is a French electroacoustic / free improvisation / experimental collective and non-profit institution, founded in 1978 by guitarist and composer Jean-Marc Montera, and based in Marseille. Since 2016, the Group has been merged by gmem-CNCM-marseille and continues its activities as DRIM – Départements de Recherche et d’Improvisation Musicales (Department for Music Research and Improvisation).
GRIM has been active in development, promotion and dissemination of improvised and experimental music by curating Nuit d'Hiver Festival and several other concert series and regular events, and also operating a recording studio, two concert halls and a library for research and educational activities. In 2012, when Sonic Protest Festival has expanded to five cities across the country, GRIM co-organized the Marseilles branch of the festival, featuring Tony Conrad, Chantal Morte, Terrie Ex and Paal Nilssen-Love, Keiji Haino, and The Yuri Landman Ensemble.
