An independent day and boarding school in Godalming, Surrey. Founded by Thomas Sutton in 1611 on the site of the old Carthusian monastery in Charterhouse Square, Smithfield, London, it educates over 800 pupils, aged 13 to 18 years, and is one of the original Great Nine English public schools.
Among its alumnae are Christopher Gibbons (c. 1615-1676), Basil Harwood (1859-1949), Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), Philip Radcliffe (1905-1986), Christopher Raeburn (1928-2009), Peter Grant (1935-1995), Dave Lawson (b. 1945), Peter Gabriel (b. 1950), Tony Banks (b. 1950), Mike Rutherford (b. 1950), Chris Stewart (7) (b. 1950), Anthony Phillips (b. 1951), Peter Oundjian (b. 1955), Karl Wallinger (b. 1957), Rachel Portman (b. 1960), and Mark Blatchly (b. 1960).
