The Odeon Theater was founded in 1988 by Ulrike Kaufmann and Erwin Piplits.
The theater was originally the great hall of the market for agricultural products. He was in the 80s of the 19th Century built and heavily damaged in the last days of the war in 1945 by a fire. Therefore, he remained a long time on unused until the Serapion Ensemble finally, mostly, adapted it to their own means an event site. Following the Greek Odeon, which was a covered, open space for dance and musical performances, the hall was called Odeon.
Since its establishment in 1988, the Odeon is an essential part of cultural life in Vienna, a special framework for the work of Serapion ensembles and coveted venue for numerous guest events.
