Inner City Records founded in 1972 and owned by George Semper (RIP 1942-2009) musician, producer, writer, and executive producer . Inner City Records released "The Perfect Circle", "Mean Machine", and "Ron and Candy", and Funkateers. Inner City Records was known as a "musicians label" bringing artists bands to the forefront of their own projects including Funkproof (Bretton Woods backup band) and Mean Machine (backup band for Ode's Merry Clayton).
Inner City's music genre ranges from the gritty garage funk of In One Peace and Funkafreak to the disco-boogie-hard sound of Mary Love and the Perfect Circle. Cover versions include The Isleys “It’s Your Thing” and Hammond-organ driven version of Sly Stones “Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin)”. Bands released include Funkafreek, Funkhouse, United Soul Association and The Funkateers which included early incarnations of Rodney Franklin, Charles Owens, Al Mckay (Earth Wind and Fire) and James Gadson (of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band and vocalist on “Express Yourself”).
Inner City Records counterpart Inner City Attractions released FUNKPROOF (Bretton Woods backup band) and others but functioned as a separate entity. For 30 years Inner City Records produced and published some of the finest funk ever created including 2003 release of by Ubiquity Records / "Luv N' Haight imprint titles "Luv N' Haight George Semper Present Inner City Sounds:Gritty Soul & Underground Funk from the Vaults of Inner City Records".
