Nippon Grammophon was originally formed as 日本ポリドール株式会社 (Japan Polydor Co., Ltd.) in 1953 with a capital of 60,000,000 yen. In April 1956 the name was changed to Nippon Grammophon Co., Ltd. and also that year the company began to release its Japanese repertoire.
In October 1965, Nippon Grammophon Genno Publishing was formed as publishing subsidiary.
The company moved to their new offices in Meguro, Tokyo in November 1967.
Deutsche Grammophon GmbH controlled 50 percent of Nippon Grammophon stock, Fuji Denki controlled 24,5 percent, and the rest was held by various Japanese interests.
Effective October 1, 1971, the company name was changed to Polydor K.K.
