Kulturkirken Jakob

Kulturkirken Jakob (in English Jakob Church of Culture or St. James Church of Culture) is situated in the eastern part of central Oslo, Norway. It is an old neo gothic church building designed by architect Georg Andreas Bull that between 1880 and 1985 was the main church of the parish by the southern part of the Akerselva River, where Oslo’s traditional industrial area now has been changed into an area of media and culture. The church was left over as the demographic development in Oslo made the density of churches in central Oslo far too high for the population. In the year 2000 the record company KKV (Kirkelig Kulturverksted) took over the building and turned it into a sacred building for the arts. First of all it serves as a brilliant concert facility, housing 550 people, but besides that, theatre performances and art exhibitions frequently take place in the old building.
