Launching "Pippi Langstrumpf" ("Pippi Longstocking") in 1949 and later all other books by Astrid Lindgren the publisher was the pioneer for Swedish children's literature in Germany. Other important authors are James Krüss, Erich Kästner, Paul Maar, Henning Mankell, Cornelia Funke, Sven Nordqvist, Erhard Dietl but also Suzanne Collins ("The Hunger Games").
Since the beginning of the 21st century the publishing group also specialized in adults' literature like crime, humour, graphic novels etc. which are released by subsidiaries Atrium Verlag ("Erich Kästner Verlag").
The first digital product of Verlag Friedrich Oetinger GmbH was a CD-ROM of "Pippi Langstrumpf" in 1992. Later in 1996 they set up the new subsidiary Oetinger Media GmbH for audiobooks and radioplays.
