-ismst Recordings was started in August 1992 by Dan Schlissel while he was a student at the University of Nebraska and was doing bands booking. The origin of the name came from a conversation between Mercy Rule drummer, Ron Albertson and Schlissel. The label name was to be "In Spite of Myself," however Albertson suggested calling it -ism, meaning different forms of art and thought.
