Influential Houston, Texas studio founded in October 1941 by Bill Quinn (2) as Quinn Recording; renamed in 1944 as Gold Star Recording Studios. Ownership passed to engineer J. L. Patterson, Jr. when Quinn retired c.1962-63. Producer Huey P. Meaux took over in the early 1970s, changing the name to Sugar Hill Studios. Noted for early recordings by Lightnin' Hopkins; Big Bopper, The; George Jones; Sir Douglas Quintet and Freddy Fender. It is the oldest continuously operating studio in the southeastern United States.
