The classical building is one of the major works by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Opened 1821 as "Königliches Schauspielhaus" (Royal Playhouse) and renamed "Preußisches Staatstheater" (Prussian State Theatre), from 1919 through 1945, the theatre sustained heaviest damage during World War II. Following renovations and reconstructions the building was reopened 1984 as concert house. According to the change of use the building received its present-day name "Konzerthaus Berlin" in 1994, but is still well known by the old name Schauspielhaus Berlin.
