Soul Candi

Launched in 2001 out of what was once the "Sugartrax" music store in Rosebank, Johannesburg by DJ Mbuso and Harael Salkow, Soul Candi became South Africa's leading vinyl importer and a major independent label (in a joint venture with the now-defunct Sheer music). The label's first release was the successful "Soul Candi Session 1" compilation in 2003 and the company has grown at a staggering rate, since 2004 even including an "Institute of Music". Imprint Phezulu Records split off in 2006, and in August 2007 they launched an on-demand music service available via the local cellular networks. Several short-lived sublabels followed, and as of recently the brand's recorded output has waned as they concentrate on being an all-encompassing media house and music school.
