The Matrix

The Matrix was a nightclub in San Francisco from 1965 to 1972. A renovated former pizza shop, The Matrix was co-owned by Marty Balin, Gary Jackson and Peter Abram, one of the key venues to what eventually became known as the 'San Francisco Sound'. It also became a favorite watering hole for gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who was then a contributor to Rolling Stone. The Matrix opened on August 13th 1965, showcasing Jefferson Airplane, which vocalist Balin had put together as the club's 'house band'. Founder of Rolling Stone Ralph J. Gleason was also a frequent visitor and aided to the band's success in his columns. Balin later sold his shares to his two partners and Peter Abram was much involved in live recordings at the venue e.g. [m913993]. The cover of [m47868] was photographed at The Matrix. In the Fall of 1966 the Club was run by Bill Ehlert, owner of the Jabberwock - whose house artist/designer Tom Weller (2) then helped promote Matrix shows with handbills & posters. Early in 1971, the original Matrix closed and owner/operator move it to 412 Broadway in late summer 1973. The club finally close after the Iggy and The Stooges' Halloween 1973 show. This venue reopen as a club finally from 1980 to 1993 it was The Stone, San Francisco.
