Mojo

Mojo was the Soul subsidiary of Polydor Records in the UK. John Abbey and Bob Killbourn of Blues & Soul magazine were initially retained as A&R consultants to source product for the label (Billboard, 27th February 1971), a role that Abbey's Contempo International Ltd. was also to perform for Atlantic and Stax. The agreement was terminated by Contempo towards the end of 1972, and Mojo appears to have been shelved six months or so later. During the three years of its existence Mojo issued a steady stream of quality American material, a mixture of older re-issue classics aimed at the nascent Northern scene and newer contemporary funk such as James Brown productions from the King and People labels and early Kool & The Gang from De-Lite, amongst a plethora of others. It's first single - Tammi Lynn's 'I'm Gonna Run Away From You' (2092-001) proved to be its biggest hit, reaching No. 4 in the UK charts in early 1971. Please note that Mojo releases were typically large centre issues, pressed by Phonodisc Ltd. in the UK. Versions with any variety of small centres should be treated as unique submissions in the database, distinguishing them from the large centre editions.
