Motown Records, Canada Ltd.

Canadian wholly-owned subsidiary of Motown Record Corporation opened March 18, 1974 with Ron Newman (formerly of Stereodyne Canada Limited, Motown US and Phonodisc Limited) as Managing Director. The branch was started not only to distribute Motown product (including sub-labels) in Canada but also to develop and release Canadian talent. With the establishment of the subsidiary the Tamla Motown label went defunct in Canada. Motown Records Canada Ltd. is the common spelling of this company found on releases. Immediately prior to the formation of the subsidiary Motown was handled in Canada by Ampex Of Canada Ltd.
