The RPM Record Company (Pty) Ltd. was founded in 1967 by clarinettist Dan Hill and ex-GRC sales manager Matt Mann, with the original offices situated in Electro House (corner of Goud and Fox Streets), downtown Johannesburg. Sometimes written as "RPM Record Co. (Pty) Ltd." / "RPM Record Co." / "RPM (Pty.) Ltd." / "R.P.M. Record Company" or any permutation thereof, it was the local distributor for labels such as Ariola, Arista, Geffen Records, Virgin, Island Records, David Gresham Records, Principal Records, Motown as well as its own RPM and Budgie (2) imprints.
In 1996 it merged with the Gallo Record Company and became the division handling Gallo's domestic roster.
