Acetates with this label are demo productions of the publishing arm of Mercury Records, headed up by Joel Diamond, who once described it as “a little Brill Building” because of its vibrant and successful songwriting culture. Tommy Motolla, who started his career there, said, "That little office on 110 West Fifty-Seventh Street was a magnet for creativity." In 1969, Philips bought control of Mercury and when Philips and Siemens reorganized their joint-ventured operations, M.R.C. ceased independent operations and was absorbed into Chappel Music. The mass staff firings (and alleged looting of office equipment) were described by Motollo as "the best corporate bloodbath I ever survived."
