Canadian label launched in 1976 by Nimbus 9 Productions Limited with Peter Clayton (5) as label manager. Initially specialised in audiophile direct-to-disc limited editions recorded at Soundstage, Toronto while being cut next door at J.A.M.F. Plates were sent to Germany where the pressing was done by TELDEC. Finished product was shipped back to Canada where it was then distributed / exported by Nimbus. In 1978 Umbrella switched to pressing at CBS' Don Mills plant and in 1979 they transitioned away from direct-to-disk in favour of digital recording. Product was imported by local importers as follows: Australia: MR Acoustics Austria & East European Countries: Hifi UK, EEC & Middle East: d.b.h. Cassettes Ltd. then Quadramail Malaysia & Singapore: United Bearings U.S.A.: Audio-Technica U.S., Inc. Import stickers do not change the country. All Umbrella releases are Canada and were only available outside of Canada by import unless a regional distributor is printed directly on the release.
