Associated Sound (East Africa) Limited (ASL) was a major conduit for Lingala records in Kenya, licensing tracks from labels in DRC Congo and Congo-Brazzaville. It's origins were as a Nairobi branch for Gallo Records in the 1950s. In 1961, ownership was transferred to a UK holding company held by Gallo and the Gallo assets in Kenya became ASL. In 1967, the holding company sold a 50% stake in ASL to PPI (Philips) which ran the company. Finally, after 1973, the remaining 50% share of ASL was sold to Phonogram (successor to PPI and Philips Records EA).
