The European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, is the world's largest particle physics laboratory. Established on September 24, 1954, the Organization is located near Geneva, Switzerland, on the French–Swiss border. Particle accelerators such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are designed at CERN through international collaborations for the high-energy physics research. CERN is also known as the birthplace of the World Wide Web.
The acronym CERN refers to the Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (European Council for Nuclear Research), a provisional council established in 1952 to found the Organization.
