Originally built as a hotel in 1883, it was converted to a German Protestant mission center in 1903. In 1910, the building was sold to English missionary Francis Newton, and after 1948 was purchased by the Rothschild Foundation, which transformed it into a prominent Israeli cultural center. In 2002, the structure was renovated and renamed "The Hecht Center."
