In mid-1908, Thomas Alva Edison's engineers had developed a new method for producing the high speed hard wax moulded cylinder records that had been marketed by the National Phonograph Company as "Edison Gold Moulded Records" since 1903. The new method substituted finely powdered graphite for gold in the plating process. At this time the "Gold Moulded" designation was dropped from cylinder boxes and promotional materials. For a short period, these cylinders were marketed in tubes labeled simply "Edison Records", but with the introduction of the 4 minute Edison Amberol Record in October 1908, the two minute issues were designated "Edison Standard Records".
