Broadcast (2)

British budget label, originally owned by Vocalion (2), from mid-1932 by Crystalate. Vocalion (2) introduced its popular 8" Broadcast records in 1927, selling them for 1s./3d, and later for just 1/- (i.e., 1 shilling). Despite their smaller size, Broadcast records had the same playing length as standard ten-inch records while being less expensive. In 1931, the size of the records was increased to 9"; in 1933, the label was discontinued. Most of the recordings were made by Harry Bidgood and a studio band, both under Bidgood's name and a variety of pseudonyms. Later on, a number of real bands also recorded for Broadcast (2), such as such as Victor Vorzanger, The Original Havana Band, Ciro's Club Orchestra, Bertini, Percival Mackey, and Hal Swain. Over the years, a variety of spin-off labels were introduced, first the short-lived 6" Broadcast Junior children's records (from 1927), then the Broadcast Twelve records (from 1928), that were supposed to play as long as regular 12-inch records, then Broadcast Twelve Super Dance (from July 1929 to the end of 1930), Broadcast Super Twelve (March 1931 to April 1934, and finally Broadcast Four-Tune (1933) and Broadcast International (1933). An Australian version of the 8-inch Broadcast (2) label existed as well, marked by the words "Made in Australia."
